Adult Lesson Programs

These group lessons programs are a great way help you learn, refresh or refine your balance, propulsion and co-ordination skills to improve your ski technique—and meet other skiers at a similar level as you. Programs include drills and exercises to hone in on areas of improvement for your skiing, and skiing out on the WCCSC trails to put your new skills into action.

Registration opens at noon on November 1. Please register early as spaces are limited.

Program options are listed below. We may be able to add more dates and groups, so check back for updates and sign up to the waitlist options on the registration form if the group you want is already full.

COST: $100 for 3-week programs and $150 for 5-week programs.

Which group is right for me?

Classic Skiing

Level 1 – a super beginner class for those who have never cross-country skied before, or have skied only a few times previously. You will learn the basics of cross-country skiing, including skiing up and down small hills so you can get out to enjoy beginner trails. Note: participants should have a basic level of fitness, for example able to walk 2-3 km.

Level 2 – for those with some previous cross-country ski experience (one season or so) cruising around the beginner (green) ski trails on classic skis, including uphill and downhill, for instance to Harvey’s Hut and back. This group will work on refining and increasing classic skiing skills to gain more confidence to explore some intermediate (blue) trails.

Level 3 – for skiers who can ski varied intermediate (blue) trails, both up and downhill. You will refine your balance, propulsion and co-ordination skills to ski more efficiently, with more confidence and maybe a bit more speed. Step turns and kick double pole will be introduced. Participants should have the stamina to ski 10+ km.

Level 4 – for skiers who can very confidently classic ski on blue, and can ski on black trails but with less confidence. This group will continue to refine balance, propulsion and co-ordination skills to ski more efficiently, polish technique, and rhythmically use various maneuvers—including kick double pole and step turns—in their skiing. Participants should have the stamina to ski 15+ km.

Skate Skiing

Level 1 – you are a confident classic skier but have little, or no, experience on skate skis. This group will work on skill-building exercises to help you learn the basics of skate skiing.

Level 2 – you know the basics of skate skiing and can ski on easy/beginner terrain (green trails) including flat, rolling and uphill sections for instance to Harvey’s Hut and back. Skiers in this group will continue to develop their one-skate, diagonal skate, and wedge turns. Off-set will be introduced.

Level 3 – you are confident skate skiing on varied intermediate (blue) trails, both up and downhill but could use some continued work on your one-skate and offset techniques to increase balance, propulsion and co-ordination. Step turns and two-skate may be introduced. Participants should have the stamina to ski 10+ km.

Level 4 – for skiers who can very confidently skate ski on blue terrain, and ski on black terrain but with less confidence. This group will continue to refine balance, propulsion and co-ordination skills to ski more efficiently, polish technique, and rhythmically use various maneuvers—including one-skate, two-skate, off-set and step turns—in their skiing. Participants should have the stamina to ski 15+ km.

A few notes about the programs:

  • Groups will have a maximum of eight skiers and will be led by a qualified instructor.

  • The temperature cut-off will be -25 Celsius. Some sessions may need to be shortened or canceled due to weather, conditions or other circumstances. Participants will be notified with an email from the program coordinator or their instructor several hours ahead of the session.

  • WCCSC season pass or day tickets are required for the programs. A discounted day ticket is available for your lesson days.

  •  If you know you have to miss some session, please allow someone who can attend the full program to register.

  • Each lesson builds on the previous week, so it is recommended you get out and practice between lessons!

  • Program registration is non-transferable and program fees are not refundable except in cases of injury or illness, in which case there will be a $20 administration fee and a prorated refund based on remaining time left in the program from the time the injury/illness is reported. A doctor's note must accompany requests for refunds for injury or illness.

  • If a session is cancelled, the instructor will try to arrange a make-up session, likely in the week following the last planned session.

  • We will send registrants a welcome email with detailed information approximately two weeks before the lessons begin.

Need to rent equipment for your lessons? No problem!

Rental equipment (skis, boots, poles) is available for the total price of $50 for your 3 or 5 week lesson block . Plus … you can use the equipment for one week before and one week after your program! Please email info@xcskiwhitehorse.ca in advance of your program start date to arrange sizing. Note: you will need to pick up and return your equipment at the chalet each time you ski as the equipment will also be used by other skiers/programs.

We are looking for more instructors!

There are many people in the community who would like to learn how to ski. If you are an intermediate or higher level skier in Classic and Skate, consider sharing your love of xc skiing with others! If you would like to become an instructor with the WCCSC Adult Program, the club will cover your CANSI (Canadian Association of Nordic Ski Instructors) training course fees if you commit to instruct for 2 seasons in the program.
