Morrison Hershfield Lynx
We delayed registration to September 15th this year, allowing us time to prepare our program the safest way as possible.
Lynx is for young skiers aged 8 to 12 years old who wish to improve their overall cross-country ski skills and share funs moments in a group environment.
Our aim is to provide a fun program that will enhance the skiers’ enjoyment of the sport and increase their overall ski skills. Sessions will have a base element of skill instruction as well as plenty of time simply skiing with the group but will also make use of games and drills to enhance learning, improve fitness and enjoyment. While we will invite Lynx skiers to enter races or events if they are interested, this is not a racing group and is not intended to train skiers to race.
There will be three options for skiers participating in Lynx this year:
Lynx 1 - a one day per week option that will focus on high paced game and drills on trails immediately surrounding the Chalet. (Wednesday evening from mid-November until March break)
Lynx 2 – a two day per week option. Skiers will be all together on Wednesdays and will also meet on Saturday afternoon to explore the Mount Mac trail network more fully. (Wednesday evening and Saturday afternoon from mid-November until March break)
Learn to Lynx – A one-day per week option suited for skiers who are new to the sport, or unsure about their abilities. This option will be focused on a “lesson” style format - helping skiers develop confidence and new skills as Lynxes prior to joining one of the other groups. A set of 5 lessons will be held before Christmas. We will start with the basics of classic ski technique and build skills from there. A second set of 5 lessons will be offered after Christmas. Skiers are welcome to participate in both “sets” of lessons.
Both Lynx 1 and Lynx 2 are suited for skiers with an established interest and ability in the sport. If they are excited by the prospect of a ski to Harvey’s Hut or Sarah Steele Hut, then this is a good group for them.
If you would like to arrange a seasonal rental of equipment for use for the Lynx Program this season, please visit us at the Ski Club before November 22 (please check our opening hours here), so we can fit your child for their boots, skis and poles for the season.
Seasonal Rental Packages are $100 for the Lynx 1 & 2 Program.
Rental packages are also available for the Learn to Lynx program for $35. Equipment can only be used during the program.

Cold weather Guidelines:
I will emphasize that I have based these guidelines in consultation with the Club and experience in programs here and in other cold parts of Canada. To my knowledge, there is no definitive medical guide or national standard (I've searched!!). I encourage you to determine your own limits if these are outside your comfort zone.
Normal practice at or above -20C (Env Canada Temp 1 hour before practice; not including wind Chill)
Practice shortened to 1 hour from -21C to -24C (Env Canada Temp 1 hour before practice; not including wind Chill)
Practice shortened to 1 hour and not skiing (snow games, hike; boots and proper clothes) from -25C to -29C (Env Canada Temp 1 hour before practice; not including wind Chill)
Cancelled at or below -30.
Parents are free to determine their own limits also.
Coach judgement will be used if there are other factors such as high winds, humidity, precipitation; email will go out if practice is being modified.
