Week of November 11, 2019

Wednesday, November 13/Thursday, November 14 - Skiing!  We will skate ski.  The snow-making is complete, but there is still machinery working to redistribute the snow.  We will still ski though.  Please dress for the weather and remember your headlamp.

The Whitehorse Cross Country Ski Club operates on a model that promotes a healthy lifestyle and joy in lifelong physical activity.

The Junior Athlete Development program provides skiers an opportunity to develop technique, increase physical fitness and explore the many facets of cross-country skiing. Skiers can join at any age regardless of previous ski experience and are grouped according to ability. 

Cross country skiing may seem like an individual sport but the enjoyment and fulfillment for any athlete comes from being part of a team, a club, a community.  Our club strives to maintain a strong team spirit, and we will look to build that community and team spirit through this program.

The objectives of the program will be Fitter, Faster, Stronger, and athletes will be able to use these skills towards whatever their personal goals are in the sport of cross country skiing.  

Objectives for this program are:

  • Challenge athletes physically and mentally

  • Enabling athletes to identify and work towards their goals 

  • Provide drills and activities that foster continuous technical improvement in cross-country skiing.  Athletes will practice both classic and skate technique.

  • Nurture a fun and inclusive space where social activities compliment physical challenges.

  • Create a love and passion for outdoor physical fitness in all seasons while exploring the Mt Macintyre area. “Dryland” workouts will begin in September, with a focus on running and strength training to build a base of physical conditioning.

  • Provide an environment where opportunities to race are offered if this is something the athlete is interested in.

 

A head program coordinator will support this program.  All coaches will work with the program coordinator throughout the season to coordinate all practice plans and skill and fitness development. 

 

DETAILS

AGE GROUP: 12-18

DATES: SEPT 16, 2019-APRIL 2020 (END DATE DETERMINED BY SNOW CONDITIONS)

DAYS OF WEEK: TWO PRACTICES PER WEEK – MONDAY (ALL ATHLETES) AND CHOICE OF WEDNESDAY*OR THURSDAY - 4:15-6:00

FEE: $380** FOR SEASON; MEMBERSHIP WITH WHITEHORSE CROSS COUNTRY SKI CLUB IS ALSO REQUIRED

 

*The option of a Wednesday practice is being piloted for 2019/20; we will require a minimum of 8 athletes in order to deliver this option.  The Wednesday and Thursday practices will be identical to one another. Please specify preference when registering.
