Snowshoes now available in 3 sizes:  smaller size for kids and 2 adult sizes.

Nordic blades are a speed skating type blade that is mounted on a ski binding. The blades can be used with any SNS Profil type ski boot. They can not be used with Pilot type boots. The Nordic blades work best on natural ice, such as on lakes or outdoor rinks.

The Ski Base has a brand new Baby Glider pulk available this year.  It has a single pole and shock cord to reduce jerking and facilitate classic or skating technique.  Save the hassle of hauling and storing a pulk.  Rent by the month or for the full season.

$10 per day or $20 per month or $75 for season

  • Ski club members have priority over day pass users.
  • Pulk to be used on ski club trails only.
  • Rental fee is $5 per day.
  • Seasonal rental for club members - $20.
  • May be booked up to one week in advance.
  • Payment is due before pulk is taken out. Please pay at the Ski Base.
  • Renter is responsible for arranging a pick up time.
  • Renter is responsible for loss or damage.
  • Manager/staff will check pulk when returned to assess condition.
  • To book the pulk, call The Ski Base at (867) 668-4477.

Skiing Safely with Infants and Toddlers

If you ski with a young child in a pulk or backpack carrier, please consider the following safety information:

It is recommended that babies of 3 months or younger should not be taken out in a pulk or a backpack.

You may be warm and sweating from the exertion of skiing; your child is sitting or lying and not generating any heat from exertion.

Infants and toddlers do not regulate their body temperatures as effectively as adults.

Check that your child is warm (but not sweating) regularly especially checking their fingers, toes, and ears as these are good indicators of circulation to the extremities; if a child’s core body temperature is dropping, their extremities will be the first places to feel cold.

When possible, ski with another skier who can help you check your child without unhooking from the pulk or carrier; the easier it is to check your child, the more likely your child will be checked regularly.

Here are some methods for keeping your child warm:

  • In a pulk, position closed cell foam underneath as an insulator
  • Use insulating layers such as snowsuits, sleeping bags, non-cotton blankets
  • Make sure the child is dry before you start and during the ski
  • Warm water bottles or heat packs can help provide additional heat; do not place these directly against the skin; regular checking will make sure you are not overheating your child
  • Make sure your child is protected from chill created by the wind or your downhill speed

If using a backpack carrier even at moderate air temperatures, be aware that sitting in a harness can restrict blood flow to the legs /arms; this can have dire consequences. There have been tragedies with toddlers in carriers resulting in amputations of legs due to restricted blood flow.

Be very cautious when skiing in fast conditions and downhill – falling with a child in a pulk or carrier can result in major injury. When in doubt, get out of the tracks and snowplow, or take off your skis and walk down the hill.

Inappropriate use of pulks or backpacks can result in serious injuries and hypothermia.
