Sport Yukon Awards 2010

Ski Club Active Member Awards

Each year the club selects volunteers to be honoured at the Sport Yukon Awards Night.

Trailworker of the Year - Tom Fairman

Tom has been a mainstay of the volunteer grooming team for many years. Last winter was no exception, but he put in even more hours as a volunteer for the Haywood Ski Nationals. Tom patiently passes on his knowledge to new recruits and always has stories to tell after the grooming is done. Tom has a lot of energy and puts in hundreds of hours a year.

Club Event Volunteer of the Year- Beth Hawkings

Although Beth has volunteered for years as a timing official and race organizer, she is usually not in the limelight during major events, being closeted in the timing hut before, during and after the races. In addition, she has spent many hours training volunteers, especially in the months prior to the Haywood Ski Nationals. Beth worked with other dedicated volunteers to train a team of exceptional timers. She takes a lot of pride in her results and the racers appreciate it! Beth’s commitment was a big reason why the Nationals were a success.

Skier of the Year - Angela Sabo

Angela is a lifestyle skier. She skis nearly every day regardless of weather and snow conditions. Angela tackles the tough trails and the Pierre Harvey loop is one of her favourites. She has skied for most of her life and is a great role model for all ages, quietly passing on her love of skiing. Angie also volunteers at club events and competes at club races.

Administrator of the Year- Susan Tinevez

Susan was the Competition Secretary for the Haywood Ski Nationals. She worked diligently for over a year to ensure that the registration process was organized, website developed and race office in top condition. She impressed the visiting coaches with her organizational skills, friendly staff, and an attitude of making sure all participants and coaches were well looked after. Susan spent most of the event in the Race Office and was there from early morning until midnight most nights.

City of Whitehorse Volunteer of the Year 2009

Derrick Hynes

Nominated for his contribution to the club this year. Derrick led the work on Strategic Planning, Business Plan and the Business Model Analysis. He was also a Jackrabbit Leader and Vice President of the board.

Sport Yukon Awards 2009

Ski Club Active Member Awards

Each year the club selects volunteers to be honoured at the Sport Yukon Awards Night.

Trailworker of the Year - John Wright

John began volunteering as a groomer only a few years ago but has been an eager learner and has been available whenever called upon for grooming and for other trail maintenance work during the past summer. John has been a great help in organizing the equipment building and making improvements on the grooming equipment.

John and his family have been club members for many years and they enjoy the fruits of John’s labour. Often, he is grooming at 6:30 a.m. and then skiing before noon. .

Administrator of the Year - Derrick Hynes

Derrick was a vice-president for the ski club board last season. He spent many hours working on the Strategic Plan, Business Plan and the Business Model Review. He was also our spokesperson for land tenure issues and also found time to help with the Orange Squad.

Skier of the Year - Sara Nielsen

Sara is an excellent role model for our younger skiers. Not only does she ski most days and in the coldest weather, but she coaches and competes. Last year, Sara was the fastest woman in the Canadian Berkebeiner race in Edmonton. She was also a volunteer coach for the Red and Blue squads of the Yukon Ski Team. Sara has a positive, enthusiastic approach to skiing and is passing it along to many others.

Event Volunteer of the Year - Lorrie Greer

Lorrie has been a major ski swap organizer for a few years now. She has contributed some great ideas to improve the Ski Swap and is there to follow through. Again this year, Lorrie  spent time in the off season, planning the 2009 swap and took on the major volunteer role to make sure we had another successful event.

Monique Waterreus Award 2009
