Sport Yukon Awards 2012

Ski Club Active Member Awards

Each year the club selects volunteers to be honoured at the Sport Yukon Awards Night.

Club Event Volunteer of the Year- Jan Milner

Jan was a key player in the 2012 Arctic Winter Games.  As one of the key “behind the scenes” volunteers, she took care of the huge administrative role for the XC ski portion of the games, keeping the race office running like a well oiled machine.

Skier of the Year - Scott Fraser

Scott has been a fixture at the club for many years and is always on the scene for any race, major or minor.  He continues to ski  despite some recent health problems, providing inspiration to many

Administrator of the Year- Lorna Hutchinson

Lorna has been a tireless club volunteer and board member for many years.  As board secretary, she has been “the glue that binds the board together.”  In addition, she can be found volunteering at just about any event the club hosts.

Trail Worker of the Year - Craig Beatty

Another lifetime skier who can always be counted on to help out at anything, Craig has been a key player and has taken the lead in the conception, development and construction a recent addition to the club’s extensive trail system.

Monique Waterreus Award 2012

The Monique Waterreus Award is a $200 prize given to the junior skier with the best results at a national or international event.

This year the award went to two skiers, both previous award winners:  Dahria Beatty and Janelle Greer.

Both skiers were chosen to represent Canada at the World Junior Championships last February in Turkey.

“Trying to pick one skier is always tough,” noted incoming club president Anne Kennedy.  “We have had such a great depth of field for the last few years that the decision is getting harder and harder.  It’s a great problem to have as a club.”

The two skiers train full time,  living in Canmore and training at the Alberta World Cup Academy.

Nominations for club awards are always welcome.  Please submit nominations to the ski club office.
